Why Do Ink Cartridges Cost So Much?

Don’t you just hate it when you get a really cheap printer and then when it comes to replacing the ink cartridge it costs a small fortune? Ink cartridges can cost a lot more than the actual printer itself and cannot be easily avoided. Some inkjet cartridges cost up to £35 each for a measly 21ml, making printer ink one of the most expensive liquids on the planet.

The consumer is annoyed at the apparent high price of authorised replacement ink cartridges (OEM) and tempted by cheaper third-party alternatives such as those made by Jet Tec in the UK.

The Real Cost

The printer supplies industry has adopted the practice of mobile phone and razor blade sellers: charge low prices for initial equipment (i.e. the printer), and then make money from ongoing fees for additional needed consumables or components. Manufacturers sell consumer printers at cost or even sometimes at a loss of up to 20 per cent, say a financial analysts at Bear Sterns, who monitor HP and Epson. However, on the flip side, both firms earn a massive 60 per cent gross margin on inkjet and toner cartridges, says Bill Hand, financial analyst with Bear Stearns.

Those numbers are not exactly true, the manufacturers say. HP does make money on its printer hardware, according to Pradeep Jotwani, senior vice president of imaging supplies. In a prepared statement, Epson says that it "makes a reasonable profit on both" printer hardware and ink cartridges.

Still, consumers complain about the "give away the razor and sell the blades" business model which they perceive in the printer/ink cartridge market. Hence, the establishment of a market for cartridge recyclers to refill used/empty cartridges, or for the sale of cartridge clones at often less than half the market price of the brand-name items.

Protecting Profits

Not surprisingly, printer vmanufacturers regard the aftermarket as a financial threat. It has  been stated that at least 80 per cent of overall profits (from within Epson's and HP's printing divisions) originates from consumable supplies.

Epson integrates microchips to authenticate its cartridges. You can reuse their inkjet cartridges by refilling them. But a used Epson microchip and cartridge lose some functionality, such as the ability to monitor ink levels.  This can discourage some consumers.

UK Government Investigations

High ink jet prices among dominant ink manufacturers have caught the attention of UK and European Union regulators.

Following a year-long investigation by the UK's Office of Fair Trade (OFT), recommendation that Canon, Epson, HP and Lexmark more clearly inform ink cartridge consumers of their likely long-term printing costs. Printer makers had until October 2003 to better communicate the total cost of printer ownership, after which they face possible monetary fines from the OFT.

Also, in December 2002, the European Union linstigated a similar investigation. "We are evaluating barriers to entry into this market, prices and contracts that lock businesses into long-term relationships with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) ink makers," says Tilman Lueder, a European Union spokesperson.

Both investigations originated from consumer price complaints. Regulators have said that the gripes also came from generic vendors  and remanufacturers, who claim that the likes of Epson and Lexmark are making it very difficult to make compatible ink cartridges.

Comparing Inkjet and Laser Printers

Inkjet and laser printers allow you to print professional-looking documents, such as brochures, flyers and spreadsheets from the comfort of your home. When selecting a printer, you will need to weigh your available budget against your preferred colour quality and speed.

Find out more below about the basic types of printers and their advantages and disadvantages in order for you to shop with the right type of printer in mind.

Advantages of Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers are generally cheaper than most laser printers. You can find a reasonable colour inkjet printer for under £100 in the leading chain stores in the UK.  These printers are still the colour printing solution for most home PC owners. Other advantages are as follows:

Smaller size: This saves you space on your desktop.

Versatility: A colour inkjet can print on many types of media, including T-shirt transfers, craft paper and even printable CD/DVD discs.

Larger paper sizes: If you invest more, you can add a large-format inkjet printer to your system that can print A3 pages.

Inkjet printers have advanced a long way in the last ten years. Unfortunately, the printing process is still relatively slow compared to that of laser printing.  Additionally, the ink cartridges and specialist papers can be quite expensive (cheaper compatibles from Jet Tec are available).  Therefore, inkjet printers are more suited for home users and small businesses with lighter printing needs. Inkjet printers range in price from less than £100 to as much as £800, depending on image quality, features and paper-handling capabilities.

Advantages of Photo Printers

Some inkjet printers use more than the four basic colours of inks to produce high-quality photos.  If you own a digital camera and print a lot of photos, you may want to choose a printer specifically for that purpose.

Photo quality: The print quality is not dissimilar to that of professional photofinishing.

Memory cards: A photo printer can often print directly from digital cameras and many models also accept digital storage cards such as SmartMedia, CompactFlash, Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard or a Memory Stick.

Even though a number of different sizes of photo printers are on the market, many are more compact than the average inkjet printer. These photo printers are usually limited to printing 4x6 or smaller prints -  they cannot print standard A4 sheets, which is why they are only suitable as second printers.  If you are a serious amateur or professional digital photographer, a photo printer is worth the expense, and typically cost upwards of £150.

For a home PC owner a normal colour inkjet printer is usually the better option.

Advantages of Laser Printers

A modern monochrome (black) laser printer starts at below £100. This is quite amazing, taking into account that at one time you had to spend a minimum of £1,500 for a standard laser printer. Some advantages of laser printers include the following:

Low cost: Over the life time, toner costs for a laser printer will usually be far less per page than replacing inkjet printer cartridges.

Speed: A laser printer will usually print pages much faster than an inkjet printer.

High-quality text: An inkjet printer, no matter how much you pay for it, will never print black text and line graphics quite as clear as a laser printer can.

Quiet operation: A laser printer is usually far quieter than low-cost inkjet printers - which is a important in a quiet office.

Until relatively recently, colour laser printers were unaffordable for individuals or even small businesses.  However, there are now many models available for less than £500 and these are practicable alternatives to colour inkjets for printing spreadsheets, flyers and brochures. Considering these advantages, choose a monochrome laser printer if most of the pages that you will print are text, especially if colour isn't a requirement. You'll be pleased at chosing a laser model after you have gone perhaps six months without having to replace a single toner cartridge!  What's more, Jet Tec are now producing a range or remanufactured laser toners which are far cheaper than their branded counterparts!

How to Troubleshoot Ink Cartridge Problems.

The Jet Tec ink cartridges are the life blood of your inkjet printer - keeping your ink cartridges in the best working order can extend the lifespan of both the printer and the cartridges. With inkjet prices currently high, extending the life of each Jet Tec cartridge through proper maintenance and troubleshooting can save you a lot of time and money. If you can learn to recognise common problems early, you can remedy those problems quickly and get back to printing your documents.

Are you having problems installing your new ink cartridge?

Here are some helpful tips to solve common problems when installing a new ink cartridge:

Step 1
Remove the Jet Tec clip or tape from ink cartridge.

Make sure that you have removed all the tapes and protective plastic covers on the ink cartridge.

Step 2
Check that the Jet Tec printer cartridges are securely in place.

If the printer does not work after you have changed the cartridge, in all likelihood it means that the ink cartridge is not securely in place.

Step 3
Clean your inkjet printer cartridge heads.

Most printer software come with a set of tools or utilities for cleaning and aligning the ink cartridge and printer heads.

You may need to repeat this process several times if you have not used your printer for some time.

Step 4
Leave ink cartridge overnight.

If the cleaning routine does not work, try leaving the cartridge in the printer (turned off) overnight.

The next day, run the cleaning process again. The dried ink will soften, making it easier for the printer to clean.

If you have tried all of these steps and the new ink cartridge is still not working you may have a faulty cartridge and will need to return it.

Inkjet Printers and Laser Printers

In computing terms, a printer is a device (usually peripheral) that produces a hard copy of documents stored in electronic form, usually on print media such as paper, card or transparencies.

Many printers are primarily used as computer peripherals, and are permanently connected by a printer cable to a computer which serves as a document source. In most newer printers, a USB cable connects to a computer which serves as the document source. Other printers, commonly known as network printers, have built-in network interfaces and can serve as a hardcopy device for any user connected to the network.

In addition, many modern printers can directly interface to electronic media such as memory sticks or memory cards, or to image capture devices such as digital cameras, and scanners; some printers are integrated with a scanning and/or fax machine function - these printers are generally known as "multi-functional" or "all-in-one" printers.

Printers are designed for short-turnaround print jobs; requiring all-but no setup time to achieve a quality hard copy print of a required document.

The two main types of printers commonly found in the home and business are inkjet and laser toner printers.

A laser printer rapidly produces high quality text and graphics by employing a xerographic printing process by producing an image by the direct scanning of a laser beam across the printer's photoreceptor. In contrast, an inkjet printer operates by propelling variably-sized droplets of liquid or molten material (ink) onto almost any sized page. They are the most common type of computer printer used by consumers.

In contrast, the printing press is designed and optimised for high-volume print jobs such as newspaper print runs: printing presses are capable of hundreds of pages per minute or more, and have an incremental cost-per-page which is a fraction of that of printers.

The printing press remains the machine of choice for high-volume, professional publishing. Although, as printers have improved in quality and performance, many jobs which used to be done by professional print shops are now done by users on local printers.

However, as printer technology has improved in quality and performance, many jobs which used to be done by professional print shops can now be readily done by users on local printers.

Refilling Ink Cartridges: Secrets of a Professional

We will provide tips and tricks to refilling the newer cartridges. The newer cartridges are harder but with the techniques we will show you will have a greater chance of success.

The new cartridge is much smaller now and this changes a lot of things with regard to refilling. The main issue is that the entire internal sponge must be filled with ink in order to hold the correct volume of ink. This is hard to achieve for the amateur because of air pockets in the sponge.
The professional filler fills the cartridge under a high vacuum, which removes the air and then the ink is injected inside. Only after the sponge is filled completely is air let back into the cartridge. This works very well and if the empty cartridges is a high quality one, it almost always results in a fully working ink cartridge. Now we are talking about the small cartridges produced in the last five years. That is likea of  the small the HP56 and HP57 and the Lexmark 16 and Lexmark 26 ink cartridges.

What can you do to increase your chances of success?
The first thing is to not try to fill the cartridge to it's full capacity. For instance the HP56 originally had just 19ml of ink, so only put in 8 to 10ml of ink. Trying to fill it full will only result in leaking and other problems.

Because of the air problem it is recommend that you insert the needle as far as possible and angle it towards the printhead. Another thing that can help is to use a gravity feed. Remove the plunger from the syringe and put in the correct volume of ink. Let the ink slowly enter the cartridge by gravity.

Don't try and fill an ink cartridge that has been sitting around for weeks or months, otherwise the residue of ink will have dried out and cause blockages. Even professionals have problems with this situation. Fill the cartridge at the first sign that it's going dry to help avoid any problems.
After filling your cartridge you may find that it won't work at all. When you touch it against a paper towel nothing at all comes out. There's a channel between the print head and the compartment that has the sponge in it. If this channel gets empty it can take some effort to get it refilled with ink. You can buy a cartridge primer to solve this problem. These clip onto the cartridge and the syringe hooks to it. You pull out on the plunger of the syringe and this sucks ink into the empty void referred to. You can find these by doing a search on Google or another search engine.
The other way of forcing ink into the cartridges uses centrifugal force. Don't do this where ink can get on anything! Hold the cartridge at about shoulder height and bring the cartridge rapidly down to about level with your knee. Stop abruptly and the ink tries to keep moving, forcing it up into the printhead. You may have to do this several times before you are successful. Keep checking by touching the printhead against a paper towel. Ink should come out freely. Buying a primer is by far the best method.

Another reason for the cartridge not to print at all is that it is dripping ink. A dripping printer cartridge won't print correctly and in most instances it won't print at all. If you have over filled then you can suck some of the ink out. Alternatively, you can let it set for two to three hours.
Remember we are talking about cartridges that are not dried out. If your cartridge has dried out, it is recommend buying a new or a refilled cartridge, as you may well have a lot of problems. Additionally, we are talking about Lexmark and HP ink cartridges. For the others it is advisable to buy new compatibles, as it is much easier in the long run than refilling.

Printers - Finding Cheap Ink Jet Cartridges

Printer users will know how expensive it is to buy new printer cartridges for your ink jet printer. The best way to save money is to buy cheap inkjet cartridges. Finding cheap ink jet cartridges can be easy if you know where to look for then. There are mainly two ways of buying printer cartridges – shop online or from a supermarket or local retail store.
The internet is the best place to buy cheap ink jet cartridges. Due to increase in demand for printer cartridges many printer suppliers find it profitable to sell their products online. The online dealers have their websites, which offer information on the various types of ink jet cartridges available for purchase. Most online sellers offer discounts, especially on bulk purchases. These are really useful for office set-ups.  Shopping online gives you the option of comparing the prices offered by the different sellers and choose the cheapest discounted price. Visit three to four websites before placing your order.  We recommend that you start with UK Ink Supplies.
But care has to be taken when you are buying online. Make sure that you buy from reputed online printer suppliers. Reputed dealers give guarantees on their products and service. Some even replace faulty cartridges without any extra charge. Buying cheap ink jet cartridges online doesn't mean that you save only on the product. You can also save on shipping and travelling expenses as well. Online dealers may have free shipping facilities if you spend over a certain amount.
The other option of finding cheap ink jet cartridges may be your local retail computer supplies store. Though prices of ink jet cartridges at retail stores are considerably higher than those offered by the online stores, sometimes the retail stores may also offer discounted prices on their printer supplies. So, watch out for deals, discounts and offers from the retail store.

Glossary of terms used in this blog.

Hi there,

I thought that it might be useful to all of our readers (Ivor) that I compile a glossary to explain the terms used on this blog and also on our UK Ink Supplies website...so here they are:

Brother
Brother is an international company which specialises in laser toners amongst a vast range of products.  Other products include ink cartridges for Brother printers.

Canon
Canon are a Japan based international company who specialise in printer manufacturing and printing consumables.

Cartridge Flush
The Jet Tec ink cartridge flush is designed primarily to clean dried ink from the printhead of your printer.  This helps to improve the cartridge efficiency and result in higher quality prints.

Chip Resetter
A chip resetter is a device which can be used with some cartridges (usually Epson) to reset the chip and therefore enabling it to be used again after refilling and also so that you can have some idea of how many prints you have left.  Jet Tec are a UK manufacturer of Chip Resetters.

Compatible Cartridges
We supply Jet Tec compatible cartridges. Compatible cartridges are brand new cartridges supplied by an independent manufacturer, like Jet Tec. Compatible cartridges are manufactured to the same standards as original cartridges but are normally significantly cheaper. Any Compatible cartridges supplied to you by us are 100% guaranteed by their manufacturer.  Jet Tec ink cartridges offer an outstanding quality of print.

Dell
Dell is an international company based in America; they supply a variety of services to the consumer industry including: developing, manufacturing, supporting and marketing a range of electronic products which include cartridges and printers.

Epson
A worldwide corporation based in Japan. It is one of the world's largest manufacturers of inkjet, dot matrix and laser printers cartridges as well as printers themselves.

Fuser
A fuser is a part of a laser printer, made of a roller and a back up roller. The fuser applies heat and pressure to ensure that the toner stays there permanently. This is why pages from a laser printer are warm when they come out of the printer.

Hewlett Packard (HP)
Commonly known as HP, Hewlett Packard is a market leader in computer based products including inkjet and laser printers and consumables.

Ink

Ink is the liquid which contains dyes and/or pigments which is used for colouring a page surface to produce graphics or text.

Inkjet Cartridge
An ink cartridge is a replaceable component of an ink jet printer that contains the ink (and sometimes the print-head itself) that is spread on paper during printing. Each ink cartridge contains one or more partitioned ink reservoirs; certain manufacturers also add electronic contacts and a chip that communicates with the printer.  This allows for the printer to recognise how much ink is left in the printer cartridge.

Ink Refill Kit
An ink refill kit is a cheap and effective way of replacing the ink in an empty printer cartridge.  This is a far cheaper method than buying a replacement ink cartridge.

Laser Printer
This is a very common type of printer and widely used by businesses in offices. It produces copies which are of a high standard. This type of printing is a Xerographic printing process.

Laser Toner Cartridge
A laser toner cartridge is a consumable item used within a printer to print. A toner cartridge can be with or without OPC (Organic Photo Conductor) depending on the type of cartridge. It has Toner powder (A type of powdery ink). Once used most Toner Cartridges can be recycled.  Both Jet Tec and GreenTech produce a range of remanufactured laser toner printer cartridges.

Photo Paper
Until the advent of digital photographic processes, the sole meaning of photographic paper was paper coated with light-sensitive chemicals. So-called photo papers of today are often specially coated papers for use in inkjet or laser printers to make digital prints. This definition focuses on traditional photographic papers. Photographic paper may be exposed to light in a controlled manner either by placing a negative in contact with the paper directly (contact printing) or by using an enlarger (enlarging) in order to create a latent image. Photographic papers are subsequently developed using wet chemicals to create a visible image.

Print Head
A Print head is the device that sprays the ink onto the piece of paper. It can be either part of the ink cartridge, or an integral component of the printer.  Usually, HP printers will have cartridges with a print head, while Epson will use a print head that is integral to the printer itself.

Printer Ribbon
A printer ribbon is an inked strip of cloth. It works by making an impression of the text, not too disimilar to they way a typewriter would work. An example of the type of printer which would use this type of ink is a Dot Matrix Printer.

Remanufactured Ink and Laser Toner Cartridges
Remanufacturing is the process of disassembly and recovery at the module level and, eventually, at the component level. It requires the repair or replacement of worn out or obsolete components and modules remanufacturing of toner and Inkjet cartridges has saved millions of cartridges from being dumped on refill sites, and brought cost savings to the consumers.  Jet Tec and GreenTech both produce a range of remanufactured inkjet and laser toner cartridges.

Toner
Toner is a dry and powdery substance used in Laser printers and photocopiers to create text or graphics on a page. Originally they were just carbon based; however more recently they are a mix of carbon and polymer. The polymer is used to bind the fibres in the paper. Toner is popular as one cartridge can print thousands of pages.

Hope that helps!
